About the Provider
Dr. Howard was born and raised on a tobacco and cattle farm in northeastern Kentucky. He worked as a firefighter/paramedic for over 10 years before returning to complete his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics with a minor in biology. He attended medical school in the inaugural class of DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tennessee before moving his family to Iowa where he completed a general surgery residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa before moving to Birmingham to start a career as a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon. He is board certified in general and thoracic surgery. His wife is a UAB grad and a cardiothoracic nurse practitioner. They have 3 adult children and have adopted and are raising 3 of their 4 grandchildren. He spends his spare time with his family on their farm in Vincent, Alabama.
